The full picture

Plain cooked, peeled prawns are a safe occasional treat โ€” they're low in fat, high in protein, and contain vitamin B12 and omega-3. Raw prawns can carry harmful bacteria and the digestive enzyme thiaminase that breaks down vitamin B1. The shell is a choking hazard. Rules: fully cooked, shell removed (including tail), no seasoning (no garlic, onion, salt, lemon), small pieces. Avoid prawn cocktails, scampi, and prawn crackers โ€” all include problematic ingredients.

If your dog ate more than a safe amount

For a small accidental taste, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, or signs of discomfort over the next few hours. For a large amount or if your dog is small or has existing health conditions, call your vet. When in doubt, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center on (888) 426-4435.

Risks to watch for

  • Raw: bacteria and thiaminase
  • Shells are choking hazard
  • Breaded/seasoned versions toxic
  • Cholesterol high

Potential benefits

  • Protein
  • B12
  • Omega-3
  • Low in fat

Safe portion size

A couple of peeled plain cooked prawns for a medium dog.

Safer alternatives

  • Plain cooked white fish

Does size or breed matter?

No specific breed sensitivity to plain, cooked prawns. Portion should scale with body size โ€” smaller dogs need smaller amounts both for calorie control and because any mercury or sodium content (relevant for tuna and some preserved fish) has proportionally more impact on a smaller body. Always check for and remove shells or bones before serving.

Common questions

Can dogs eat prawns (shrimp)?
Plain cooked prawns are safe in small amounts. Raw prawns and prawn shells are not. Avoid breaded or seasoned prawns.
Is prawns (shrimp) safe if my dog has a sensitive stomach?
Dogs with sensitive stomachs or known food intolerances should be introduced to any new food very gradually โ€” a tiny amount first, then watch for 24 hours before giving more. If your dog has IBD, pancreatitis, or is on a veterinary prescription diet, check with your vet before introducing prawns (shrimp) or any new food.
