Mayonnaise is essentially oil, egg, and vinegar โ not poisonous, but nutritionally awful for dogs. The fat content makes it a pancreatitis trigger, and regular feeding contributes to obesity. Flavoured mayonnaises (aioli, garlic mayo, chipotle mayo, honey mustard) add garlic, spices, or sugar. If your dog licks a sandwich or salad with mayo, it's not an emergency, but don't share deliberately. Light mayo is still high-fat. Salad cream is similar.

If your dog ate more than a safe amount
For a small accidental taste, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, or signs of discomfort over the next few hours. For a large amount or if your dog is small or has existing health conditions, call your vet. When in doubt, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center on (888) 426-4435.
Risks to watch for
- Pancreatitis from fat content
- Garlic in flavoured mayos
- Raw egg risk in homemade
- Weight gain
Safe portion size
Not recommended.
Safer alternatives
- Plain yogurt (small amount)
Does size or breed matter?
Risk with mayonnaise scales with the quantity relative to body weight, so small and toy breeds reach a meaningful dose from a much smaller amount than large dogs. Always check for hidden risk ingredients (garlic, onion, xylitol, excess salt) in any prepared or shop-bought version rather than assuming the plain ingredient name on the label tells the whole story.
