The full picture
Lettuce is one of the safest human foods for dogs โ it's 90%+ water, very low calorie, and most varieties contain nothing harmful. That said, it's also nutritionally thin. Dogs don't need it but it's a fine low-calorie filler for overweight dogs, or a crunchy hydration treat on a hot day. Wash thoroughly (pesticide residues, potential bacterial contamination). Chop into appropriate sizes to avoid choking. Avoid salad dressings, which often contain onion, garlic, or xylitol.

Risks to watch for
- Dressings often contain toxic ingredients
- Choking on large pieces
- Very rare bacterial contamination
Potential benefits
- Hydration
- Very low calorie
- Small amounts of vitamin K and A
Safe portion size
A small handful of plain lettuce is fine.
Does size or breed matter?
No specific toxicity concern from lettuce itself at any size โ this is mainly a portion and preparation question. Always serve plain and cooked or chopped small where relevant, since whole or large raw pieces are a bigger choking risk for small and toy breeds than for large dogs. Introduce any new vegetable gradually, as too much fibre too quickly can cause loose stools regardless of the dog's size.
